Chief Scientist of OpenAI since 2024, succeeding Ilya Sutskever; a former competitive programmer (Polish IOI/ICPC) who led the pretraining of GPT-4 and the o-series reasoning models. In September 2026 he published the essay An Alien Mind, arguing that no lab has yet solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed, and calling for voluntary slowdowns and international coordination.
